Steam
Steam can be installed on Octlitch through Flathub using KDE Discover or the Flatpak command line.
Install Steam with Discover
Open Discover from the application launcher and search for Steam.
Select the Flathub version and install it.
Install Steam from the terminal
Steam can also be installed directly from Flathub:
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.SteamLaunch it with:
flatpak run com.valvesoftware.SteamFirst launch
Steam may download additional files the first time it starts. Sign in with your Steam account when prompted.
Your game library will appear normally once Steam has finished updating.
Octlitch keeps the base installation focused. Steam is available through Flathub for users who want gaming support.
Game storage
Steam creates a default library inside its Flatpak environment. Additional Steam library locations can also be configured from Steam's storage settings.
If you use another drive for games, make sure the drive is mounted before starting Steam.
Flatpak permissions
Flatpak applications run with sandbox permissions. Steam normally receives the access required for standard game libraries and hardware integration.
If you intentionally place a Steam library in a custom location and Steam cannot access it, review the application's Flatpak permissions.
Current permissions can be inspected with:
flatpak info --show-permissions com.valvesoftware.SteamGraphics drivers
Gaming performance depends on having the correct graphics drivers installed.
- AMD and Intel graphics use the drivers included with Octlitch.
- NVIDIA users should install the appropriate NVIDIA driver before relying on the system for gaming.
See the Hardware section of this handbook for graphics-driver instructions.
Keep the system updated
Update Octlitch system packages with:
sudo dnf upgrade --refreshUpdate Flatpak applications with:
flatpak updateVerify Steam installation
Check that Steam is installed:
flatpak list | grep -i steamThe application ID should be:
com.valvesoftware.SteamWindows games
Steam can run many Windows games on Linux through Proton.
Proton is managed from inside Steam and does not need to be installed as a separate Octlitch system package.
