DNF package management

Octlitch uses DNF to manage the operating system and RPM packages.

System packages

Use DNF for system components, development tools, command-line software, drivers and packages provided by the Fedora repositories.

DNF and Discover serve different purposes

Octlitch uses DNF for system packages. KDE Discover is intended primarily for desktop applications installed through Flatpak.

Update the system

Refresh repository metadata and install available updates:

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

It is a good idea to update regularly, especially for security fixes and kernel updates.

Search for a package

dnf search package-name

For example:

dnf search git

Install a package

sudo dnf install package-name

Example:

sudo dnf install git

Remove a package

sudo dnf remove package-name

DNF will show the packages that will be removed before asking for confirmation.

Package information

Display information about a package:

dnf info package-name

List installed packages

dnf list --installed

You can also check a specific installed RPM with:

rpm -q package-name

Repository information

Show enabled software repositories:

dnf repolist

Octlitch uses Fedora repositories for the base operating system. Additional repositories may be configured for specific software.

Clean cached metadata

DNF normally manages its own cache automatically. If you need to clear downloaded repository metadata:

sudo dnf clean all

Rebooting after updates

A reboot is recommended after updates to important components such as the kernel, graphics stack or system libraries.
