AMD and Intel graphics

AMD and Intel graphics support is included directly in the Linux kernel and Mesa graphics stack used by Octlitch.

Drivers are already installed

In normal installations, no separate graphics driver download is required for supported AMD or Intel GPUs.

Graphics support is provided through the kernel, Mesa and other components supplied by Fedora.

Keep Octlitch updated

Kernel and Mesa updates can provide performance improvements, hardware support and graphics fixes.

Update the graphics stack

Graphics updates arrive through the normal system update process:

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

Restart after major kernel or graphics-stack updates:

sudo reboot

Identify your graphics hardware

Display the graphics adapters detected by the system:

lspci | grep -Ei 'VGA|3D|Display'

To also show the active kernel driver:

lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'

AMD graphics

Modern AMD GPUs normally use the amdgpu kernel driver.

Check whether it is loaded:

lsmod | grep amdgpu

You can also inspect the device and driver association with:

lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'

Intel graphics

Intel integrated graphics use drivers included with the kernel and Mesa stack.

The exact kernel driver depends on the Intel graphics generation and the Fedora kernel in use.

Check the active driver with:

lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'

Firmware

Some graphics hardware requires firmware files provided by the Fedora firmware packages.

Keep the system updated so current firmware is installed:

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

Wayland

Octlitch uses KDE Plasma with Wayland as its modern display environment.

Supported AMD and Intel systems normally work with Wayland using the drivers already included in the system.

Troubleshooting graphics problems

First identify the GPU and active driver:

lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'

Then check kernel messages for graphics-related errors:

journalctl -b -k | grep -Ei 'drm|amdgpu|i915|xe|gpu'

Information about the current session can also be useful:

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

On the standard Octlitch desktop this will normally report:

wayland
